'The Race to Brunei' Golf Tournament
Sixty golfers tee'd off on Friday in the first golf tournament of the year at Stapleford Park. The prize was a trip to Brunei for both the winning pair and the winning individual - a trip to play in the 2010 Pro-Am of the Aberdeen Brunei Senior Masters.
With handicaps cut to ¾ this was a tournament designed for good golfers to play proper competitive golf on a challenging course. And so it proved with the leaderboard changing throughout the day and in particular across the last holes. In the end, the competition came down to a fairway battle between the two pairs listed in the last 4 ball, with Ric Lewis and Michael Vaughan (the former England cricket captain) stealing the win from Scott Griffin and Matt Dawson (the former England & Lions scrum-half). Ric and Michael won with 41 points on better-ball stableford. Congratulations, too, to Wentworth member Ajay Patel who won the individual prize on 36 points off a handicap of 2.

On the eve of the tournament, the players attended a pre-tournament dinner at which both Manuel Pinero and Roger Chapman addressed a fascinating Q&A session. Both Manuel and Roger will be competing in the Seniors tournament in Brunei (March 4th – 6th). “The Race to Brunei” was sponsored by the Brunei Tourist Board, Brunei Royal Airlines and the Empire Hotel & Country Club. The tournament was organised and hosted by The Stapleford Forum.
